FLORIDA SENATE PASSES ANTI-BULLYING LEGISLATION
glaad.org

In an historic move, Florida's Senate passed anti-bullying legislation on April 30. The bill now goes to Gov. Charlie Crist, who has indicated he will sign it into law. The bill includes protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. Once signed into law, Florida will become the thirty-sixth state with an anti-bullying law. Supporters of the legislation say it will be the toughest of such legislation in the country.

Passage of the bill is the culmination of eight years of work from hundreds of students, teachers and civil rights groups. "The legislature has made clear that any school that fails to prevent and respond to anti-gay bullying and to protect every student will be in violation of this law and will face consequences. We will hold them accountable," said Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida. Full Story. [5/6/08]
