Mariah Carey hits us with her latest album and it proves that she still knows how to throw it down. Many artists when they venture into something new and fresh forget the sound that made us fall in love with them in the first place. (Think marketing flunkie Ms. Jackson) Mariah is going to have all of us “fly Divas” hopping at the clubs this summer with new dance staples like Migrate, I’m That Chick and I’ll be Loving You Long Time.
Mariah knows how to reach back to reach forward. I think that everyone has a touch of the Cher on the inside and Mariah is no different. On I’m That Chick she does everything but sample Cher’s 1979 classic Take Me Home. In I’ll be Loving You Long Time she samples Motown’s 1980’s wonder Debarge and brings them back in a new and fresh way. This track is what will take this album to #1. Its fun, hip and absolutely bubbles with sexuality just below the surface. Mariah’s bringing hot monogamy back and we couldn’t be happier.
It just wouldn’t be an “au courant” Mariah album with the prerequisite tribute song. Bye Bye takes us on a personal journey into the loss of her father. She reveals herself and the pain of not getting to prove to her father that she is back on top. Getting all emotional is a Mariah trademark and is what endears her fans. They feel a part of her, part of her life.
There are some really strong tacks on this album. If you take out the few fluff songs there are some real gems that shine. Hearing the quality of the stuff that’s being released makes one wonder if a breakdown is what it takes to make it to the very glittering top?
